Steel for People and Planet Stakeholder Resolutions challenging ArcelorMittal

Dernière mise à jour : il y a 2 heures

The Steel for People and Planet stakeholder meeting took place in Esch Belval on 29th April 2024, hosted by the Initiative pour un devoir de vigilance. Human and environmental rights defenders from around the world gathered in Luxembourg to launch a challenge to ArcelorMittal, calling upon it to change its human rights, climate and environmental practices, policies and plans.

This was done through the testimonies of defenders and the following resolutions were taken:

We call on ArcelorMittal to:

  • Implement zero tolerance for attacks on affected communities and advocates, adopt measures to effectively prevent violations, ensure unimpeded access for independent investigators, and obtain Indigenous People’s unequivocal consent for all matters that directly or indirectly impact them.

  • Align its climate action with a scientifically validated 1.5C climate scenario and create by 2025 specific asset-by-asset transformation plans to end coal use globally by 2040 and end all fossil-fuel use in steel production by 2050.

  • Provide immediate, adequate and effective remedy when negative impacts occur, and seek, and obtain, the timely and informed views of all stakeholders on all matters related to their operations' impacts.

  • Show that they comply with the highest standards for workers, health and environment at every business unit around the world; and develop Just Transition plans with communities and workers that address past harms and ensure sustainability of our future.

  • Abandon its policy to buy back shares and put a temporary hold on dividend increases, and invest the full USD$10 billion before 2030 that is needed for a just transition to fossil-free steel.
